The majority of the stock certificates in this sale are from the Richard McCutchan Collection. Especially well represented are mining districts of west central Nevada, such as Divide, Goldfield, Jumbo, Simon, Weepah, Manhattan, etc. Many of the certificates are ones that we have never offered or seen before. There are also several wonderful signatures pieces: Wingfield, Oddie, D’Arcy, Patrick, Tabor, Zoebel and others. ALASKA
100. Alaska. Mining. Marshall Bond and Lou Bond Signatures. A check written on John S. Cook & Co., Bankers, Goldfield Nevada, signed by L.W. Bond, secy. & treas., and by Marshall Bond, vice-president, dated 1905. Biographical information notes that Marshall Bond went to Alaska to hunt for gold in the Klondike, became fast friends with Jack London, who based his novel “Call of the Wild” on Bond’s dog Buck. Bond arrived in Goldfield in 1904, supported himself by writing articles, and left in 1905. Lou Bond, Marshall’s brother, also prospected in Alaska unsuccessfully. He arrived in Goldfield in 1904 and took up mining, mostly unsuccessfully, until 1907. A photocopied photo of Marshall Bond is included. Est. $25-50

Brown border on crème paper. 6 1/2 x 11. Printer: Homer Lee Bank Note Co.., NY. J. A. Baker was the namesake of Baker, California. Located in the old Salt Springs area in Death Valley. In 1881 J.M. Seymour and C.A. Luckhardt gave this worthless property an exotic stage name, added to the board some respected individuals not previously associated with mining scams, and promoted the property until it became the speculative favorite of Broadway. The price went from $1 par to over $14. They made millions at the expense of unsuspecting market players and investors. [Lingenfelter, 1986, Death Valley & the Amargosa, p. 158-159]. Extremely fine. Box still holds what appear to be the original tablets. “OPTIMUS DYSPEPSIA TABLETS Are highly recommended for all forms of dyspepsia, indigestion, catarrh of the stomach, heartburn, acid fermentation and impaired assimilation of feed.” 3” x 2” x 1”. This is the same Stewart as A. B. Stewart who moved to Bodie and had his own medicine bottles and drug store. Box is brown and white, open at one end with minor chips at edges and along side joins. 141. California. Mono. Lundy. Homer Mill & Mining Co. Cert. #83. Incorporated in California in 1879. Issued to F.E. Luty, Trustee, for 100 shares in 1879. Signed by v. president N. Atkinson and secretary F.E. Luty. Uncancelled. No vignette, black border on yellow paper. Printer: Britton & Rey, S.F. 4x9. Luty also served as Secretary of the Edison Silver Mining Co. and as Secretary of the Consolidated Pacific Mining Co. that had a small shipment in 1886. J.G. McClinton, president, was probably affiliated with the McClinton mine that shipped a little over $1000 in bullion in 1887 (8th Report of the Calif. State Mineralogist, p. 397). The Homer was the largest mine in the Homer District. It produced about $650,000 in gold through 1881, according to Burchard. L.L. Homer discovered the district in August, 1879. Located about 2 miles from the May Lundy near Lundy Lake and 22 miles southwest of Bodie. The first discoveries in the district were in Mill Canyon, 1.5 miles from Lundy. J.C. McClinton, of Bodie, bought the first discovered ledge from Homer and incorporated the company. Martin Jones was the superintendent. Several other companies were incorporated about the same time, including the May Lundy and the Homer Land, Water, Mining and Mill Co. A fairly detailed description is given in Burchard, 1880. VF. These data would invaluable to the daily operation of the mine for keeping track of ore and profit. Even today, these data are absolutely essential to mine management. I had the experience to see the demise of a mine for this exact reason - Not reconciling the various assay reports from the various stages of mine operation. Est. $100-200
